DRACO Design of Resilient Architectures for Computing

Congratulations Calvin Van Wormer — M.S. Thesis Defense!

Congratulations to Calvin Van Wormer on the successful defense of his M.S. thesis, “CHIRPI: Implementing and Analyzing the CHIRP Communication Algorithm on ESP32 Hardware”!

DRACO Lab member Calvin Van Wormer successfully defended his M.S. thesis on Monday, April 6, 2026. His committee was chaired by Dr. Mike Borowczak.

Calvin’s thesis, “CHIRPI: Implementing and Analyzing the CHIRP Communication Algorithm on ESP32 Hardware,” presents a working implementation of the CHIRP communication protocol on resource-constrained ESP32 microcontrollers. The work benchmarks the algorithm’s performance characteristics on embedded hardware, contributing to our understanding of lightweight communication strategies for IoT deployments where traditional protocols carry too much overhead.

Calvin’s defense was the first of three DRACO Lab M.S. thesis defenses held during the week of April 6–8, 2026.
